Our First Rescue
Santiago's Inspirational Journey
Santiago's story is the cornerstone of This Ole Dog Rescue's mission. Discovered swimming off the shores of Oahu, Hawaii, this elderly dog was dehydrated, covered in ticks, and facing severe health challenges at around 14 years old, including kidney disease and dental issues. At the time, he was on the brink of euthanasia, but his fate took a remarkable turn when a local rescue intervened, saving him from the shelter.
Santiago found his way into the loving care of our founder, Belinda, becoming This Ole Dog Rescue's inaugural rescue. This brave senior dog transitioned from the ocean to a condo in Waikiki, sharing his life with a 17-year-old cat named Princess. With patience and love, Santiago adapted to city life, learning to navigate elevators, walk on a leash, and even share a bed with his newfound family.
As Santiago blossomed, he transformed from a timid dog to a beacon of joy in the neighborhood, capturing the hearts of passersby with his gentle presence. Despite an injury that required a wagon for walks, Santiago's spirit remained unbroken, radiating happiness to all who crossed his path.
Santiago wasn't just a rescue; he became Belinda's constant companion and source of solace after her mother's passing. His unwavering love and lessons in resilience reaffirmed the path of senior and hospice dog rescue. Santiago's memory lives on as an inspiration, a reminder of the boundless love and strength found in the hearts of senior dogs. This Ole Dog Rescue continues to honor his legacy, one senior dog at a time.
